2009-2010 Pennsylvania State Health MandatesThe following regulations have been established by the Pennsylvania Department of Health to promote the health of all students attending school in the state.
IMMUNIZATIONSAll students entering school for the first time must be fully immunized as a condition of school attendance. Children IN ALL GRADES in 2009/2010 need the following:• 4 doses of tetanus (usually given as DTP, DtaP, DT or Td) • 4 doses of diphtheria (usually given as DTP, DtaP, DT or Td) • 3 doses of polio • 2 doses of measles (usually given as MMR) • 2 doses of mumps (usually given as MMR) • 1 dose of rubella (German measles) (usually given as MMR) • 3 doses of hepatitis B • 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) Vaccine or history of disease (phased in by 2010/2011)
EXAMINATIONSA physical examination is required upon original entry into school and again in 6th and 11th grades. A dental examination is required upon original entry into school and again in 3rd and 7th grades.
HEALTH SCREENINGS
Hearing ScreeningHearing tests are performed annually by the school nurse on children in Kindergarten through 3rd, 7th and 11th grades. Children with previous hearing problems in other grades will also be screened. Classroom teachers may refer children for hearing tests.
Vision ScreeningThe school nurse administers vision tests to all students annually and any defect is reported to parents.
Height/Weight/BMI (Body Mass Index)Pennsylvania state requirements mandate all school students be screened yearly for height, weight, and BMI (Body Mass Index). Those students who fall outside the state parameters will be encouraged to contact their family physician for a follow up evaluation.
IllnessWhen your child is ill the night before a morning of school, please keep him/her home. Children who run a fever of 100 degrees or greater, vomit, experience diarrhea, coughing, sore throat, or other cold/flu-like symptoms are not ready for a rigorous day at school. The child needs, at least 24 hours to get his/her body's resistance back. Please call your child's school office to report the absence.Chicken Pox cases are reported to the State. Please notify the school nurse if your child is diagnosed with varicella. ExclusionOn occasion, a child may be suspected of having a health condition which may be contagious and warrant examination by the family doctor. In these instances, a note from the doctor will be necessary for re-admittance to school. In order to prevent the spread of contagious, infectious diseases, parents are to keep their child home when symptoms are first noticed. Also, the child must be fever free (less than 100 degrees) for 24 hours before returning to school. |
