Act 89 Program Remedial Services
The Act 89 Program is specifically designed to remediate basic reading and math skills to help your child progress in his/her literacy and/or math development. I provide additional reading and math instruction to qualifying students within our non-public schools. I work with students in a small group setting, providing individualized instruction in basic skill areas.
During instruction, I focus on a variety of skill areas. Reading instruction focuses include phonemic awareness (rhyming, listening to the individual sounds and syllables in words and learning to manipulate the sounds in words to create new words), phonics patterns in words, word building, fluency, and comprehension skills. Math instruction focuses include computation skills of the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) problem-solving strategies and word problems.
One of the best gifts you can give your child is taking the time to read to them. While reading, discuss the story and ask your child to predict what will happen next. After reading, have your child help you summarize the story. For more fluent readers, have your child read to you or a sibling.
Practice basic math computation skills with your child. Encourage your child to develop automaticity with basic facts by practicing at home through use of flashcards and games.
